GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Class Format

  1. 10 minute class presentation/discussion
  2. 10 minutes per station x 3 stations, project I and II
    -or-
30 minutes at one station (project III)
(a few classes are longer so times may need to be adjusted)

2. Security

  1. Keep all wallets locked in filing cabinet during class

3. Ways of keeping attention

  1. Try and relate scientific issues to their every day lives
  2. Come up with problems for students to think about

4. Sensitivity Issues

  1. Children come from diverse family situations. Therefore, when
discussing genetic issues relating to parents, etc., make the situations
hypothetical. (i.e. if two parents are tall, are the children likely to be tall?).

5. Disciplinary Issues

  1. Most of the children are eager to learn and cooperate. However, a few
students see the change in structure as an opportunity to misbehave.
  2. Be aware of your materials at all times. We've lost mirrors, yellow tips
(though one boy sweetly asked me if he could take a yellow tip as a
    souvenir).
  3. If a child does something improper, use a firm tone and make them aware
that they have done something wrong. If things get out of hand, make the
    teacher aware of the problem.
  4. Some children may walk away from your station or not pay attention. Try
and keep children engaged through conversation.

6. Finally

  1. Most of the children are thrilled that we are in the classroom and really
appreciate our efforts. We have a lot to offer. If you don't think you were
as effective as you would like to be, try something different the next time or
talk to one of the other volunteers about alternative approaches. Have fun
    and thanks for participating!
